Are you in search of a relatively quick and easy method to get rid of toenail fungus or Onychomycosis? If so, you’re not alone. It is a fairly common condition that, surprisingly, can go undetected for several months.
There are things you can do to lessen the severity of the problem. These things won’t completely clear up toenail fungus overnight. But, you should see an improvement within a few days.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil is a well-known natural remedy for many conditions including Onychomycosis. it has been used as a fungicide and antiseptic for centuries.
Simply soak a cotton ball with the oil and rub it on the affected nail. Using a toothbrush to lightly scrub the area works well. Go one step further by using a mixture of tea tree oil and olive oil. For mild cases, two treatments a day are typically sufficient.
In the event you don’t have access to tea tree oil, orange, lavender or oregano oil can also be used for this purpose.
Fresh Garlic and White Vinegar
Many people find success using fresh garlic and white vinegar to reduce the appearance of toenail fungus. Like tea tree oil, raw garlic contains antifungal properties.
Thoroughly crush a clove or two of garlic and mix it with white vinegar. Soak your toe in the solution for a few minutes. You can do this several times a day, without harm. Frequently eating garlic helps to naturally fend off any type of fungus.
Reduce Toenail Fungus with Topical Lacquer
If your Onychomycosis is not severe enough to require an oral medication and you are uncomfortable trying a natural remedy, a topical lacquer might be for you.
It’s very similar to clear nail polish. Brush the lacquer on the affected nail once a day. After a few days, remove the layers with rubbing alcohol and begin the process again. Penlac is just one example of a topical lacquer product available on the market today.
Bacteria-Killing Mouthwash
Using a bacteria-killing mouthwash, such as Listerine, helps to lessen the appearance of fungal nail conditions. The alcohol in the mouthwash is a wonderful antiseptic. For best results, soak your nail for 15 minutes per day. An added benefit of using mouthwash is that its ingredients have been known to speed up nail growth, in some cases.
No matter which treatment you choose, it’s very important to reduce the risk of further infection by keeping your feet clean and dry at all times. If you live in a humid climate, you might find it beneficial to wear sandals or open-toed shoes when possible.
