Artificial Nails and Infection Risks

There are several ways that fake nails are used to augment your natural nails. The most common include adhering acrylic or gel tips or full nail overlays on top of them. There are risks both during the application of the nails and when removing them.

In order to attach fake nails, the manicurist prepares your nail beds by grinding or filing them down so that the acrylics stick. An inexperienced nail technician can easily damage your nail bed or cuticles during this process, which leaves you open to infection. In addition, if this is done with unsanitized tools bacteria from other clients may be transferred to your hands.

If the nail overlays are not attached correctly, there can be a gap between the natural nail and the acrylic nail. When moisture gets in this space, a breeding ground for bacteria can form. When it is time to remove the nails, they must be soaked in strong chemicals which weaken the natural nail and the skin around the nail.  You could also have an allergy to these chemicals, and that could cause a problem.

Infections Associated with Artificial Nails

If moisture finds a way between your nail and the artificial nail, bacteria is not the only threat. A nail fungus known as onychomycosis pseudomonas can also thrive in this environment. Mold can develop, and, if left untreated can cause the natural nail to fall off. Any of these problems may cause pain and discoloration. A type of yeast infection, paronychia, may also develop in the cuticles or the skin around the nail.

Preventing Nail Infections

Preventing this type of nail infection is easier than treating it once it has occurred. In order to prevent issues, there are some rules which should be followed any time you have nails applied. These include:

  • Do not apply artificial nails if your natural nails aren’t healthy. Never apply them over an existing infection.
  • Wash your hands regularly and keep them away from your mouth to keep bacteria at bay.
  • Ensure your technician is using single use or sterilized tools to perform your manicure.
  • If an acrylic nail falls off, have it replaced professionally or clean the natural nail with an alcohol swab before reapplying it.
