Toenail fungus usually starts with a yellow or white spot on your toenail. Most people either don’t notice this or think it’s just a normal spot that will grow out and be clipped off. However, after a few weeks, you will notice that the spot is growing larger and not moving to the tip of the nail to be clipped. Your nail could become discolored or become extremely thick or crumbly.
In many cases, there is no pain involved. The biggest problem with toenail fungus is the way it looks. Almost anyone can spot it because of the crumbling nail and it looks ugly and makes people feel self-conscious. No one wants to wear sandals or go bare-foot when their nails look horrible. This means you can’t go to the pool or wear open shoes.
Treatments for Toenail Fungus
Curing toenail fungus infection may seem impossible, but it isn’t. There are many “treatments” available to you, whether you take pills, use creams, or use a home treatment of pantry items. You may be wondering what works and what doesn’t. It can depend on the person, but one thing that works is a foot bath.
How Will a Bubbling Foot Bath Treat Toenail Fungus?
Do you remember making those homemade volcanoes? What made the lava erupt? It was the reaction of baking soda and vinegar. That is actually what makes the special bubbling in the foot bath. But, you may be asking how that will cure toenail fungus.
Vinegar has an acidic nature, but is extremely mild. Most toenail fungus problems occur because the pH of your skin changes and becomes less acidic. The fungi live in a more alkaline environment, which is why they will attack your toenails. The vinegar adds back some acid into your toenails, but kills the bacteria that can’t handle acid to live. Baking soda is also used because of its acidic nature. It is almost like a double acid bath on your toenail fungus, but both together are still safe for your toes.
What You Need For the Bubbling Foot Bath
First, you will need a large basin. If both feet have toenail fungus infection, you will need it to be large enough for both feet. It needs to be able to fit 9 cups of liquid with room to spare for the bubbling action. However, it needs to be small enough that your feet will be submerged in the liquid.
The rest of the ingredients are as follows:
- 6 Cups Warm Water
- 3 Cups Apple Cider Vinegar
- 2 1/4 Cups Baking Soda
- Loofah
- Towel
Pour the apple cider vinegar into the basin. The reason apple cider vinegar is used is because it smells a little better than regular white vinegar and it is slightly more acidic. If you don’t have apple cider vinegar in your home, you can substitute white vinegar. It will just take more treatments to cure the toenail fungus.
Next, pour the warm water into the basin. In this case, warmer is better, so make it as hot as you like. The heat will cause your pores to open fully, sucking up more of the treatment and making things work faster.
Lastly, add the baking soda. The mixture will not bubble immediately, but will start very soon. If your mixture does not bubble, the baking soda is too old. You will need to throw out the mixture, purchase a new box of baking soda and try again.
You should soak the feet for 10 minutes. Then, scrub your toenails with the loofah and pat dry with the towel. Use this treatment once a day until the toenail fungus is gone.
