Get Rid of Toenail Fungus at Home

If you have toenail fungus infection, you do not have to be embarrassed about it. The condition, which is scientifically known as onychomycosis, is common and can usually be treated with home remedies. To get rid of the infection you will need a few products and tools. Luckily, most of the things you will need may be found at home.

The items you will need include:

  • Metal nail clippers
  • Medicated foot powder
  • A bucket to soak your feet in
  • Mild body wash or soap
  • A wash cloth to wash the feet
  • A towel for drying your feet
  • A nail fungus ointment or cream (this can be found OTC at a drugstore)

Clean And Dry Your Feet

Clean your feet on a daily basis.  Fill the bathtub or bucket with warm water and soak the feet for several minutes. After this, wash the feet with soap and by gently rubbing it with a soft washcloth.

Apply Foot Powder

After washing the feet, dry them well with a cotton towel. Make sure you dry in between the toes and air the feet for a few minutes before applying a medicated foot powder. The aim of the foot powder is to completely dry the toes. If you don’t have a medicated foot powder, you can use cornstarch or baby powder instead.

If you are wearing socks, make sure they are made from natural fiber. You want to keep the feet aerated during the day or night. Socks made from synthetic materials cause excess sweating and moisture buildup as they restrict air from circulating to the toes.

Clip The Toenails

Trim your toenails whenever they start becoming long. You can use nail clippers or scissors to trim. The important thing to remember is to trim the toenails it in a straight line. Do not trim the nails in a curved shape as this can lead to ingrown nails and lead to another foot problem.

Ointment

Get nail fungus ointment or cream from a drugstore. The ointments are inexpensive and can be used without prescription. If you prefer a liquid, there are dispensers that allow you to spray the liquid directly on the affected nails. If you are unsure which liquid or cream to use, get advice from a professional.

Visit Your Physician

If the home treatment does not get rid of the toenail fungus, you should see your doctor for further checkup. The doctor can prescribe oral medications as a last resort if external medication cannot remove the fungus.
