There are many people who believe choosing the proper shoes means choosing the most popular brand or the most fashionable style. Though everyone wants to look good in a shoe choice, function, in this case, is far more important than form. The type of shoe you wear can affect your back, hips, knees and the condition of your feet.

Health Problems Caused by Not Wearing Proper Shoes

One of the ways most women choose to make a significant fashion statement is through their shoes. They choose the highest spiked heel with most impressive upper to stand out from the crowd. What they do not realize is that over time, pretty shoes that are not properly designed to support the feet can do irreparable damage.

Shoes must be fitted for each individual based on his foot type. A shoe that is too tight or brings too much discomfort to the feet can create problems in the lower extremities of the body.  For example, shoes that are so uncomfortable that they change a person’s natural gait will affect the way cartilage in the knee is worn down and add pressure to the lower back.

The Dark Side of Improper Footwear

As much as women’s high heels contribute to problems, flip-flops, low sandals and flat shoes also create problems. Flip-flops cover the bottom of the foot, but offer little to no support. Podiatrists recommend that sandals should be selected with an arch support, very firm, low heels, and as few straps as possible. Multiple straps create irritation to the skin and can lead to blisters.

The simple truth is that improper foot wear is like any other poorly chosen aid. It may serve a purpose but may prove to be more of a hindrance due to the ineffectiveness of selecting a suitable product. Not only can improper footwear lead to severe discomfort but, in extreme cases may lead to in-grown nails and infections that may result in toenail fungus.

Consider Your Foot Type When Buying Proper Shoes

Feet fall into a few different general categories. Most people are flat-footed with no arches, have high arches, or have neutral feet. Those with neutral feet have the widest range of choices when it comes to buying shoes. Anything works for this foot type, though shoes for flat feet or high arches may be slightly uncomfortable.

Flat-footed should shop for shoes that are specially designed for stability and motion control. Because the foot turns in on a flat foot during running, some people also buy special shoe inserts for extra support.

By contrast, people with high arches have feet that turn out when they walk or run. Their main focus should be on buying shoes with cushion or flexibility to add shock absorption to their gait. Some with high-arched who run often have a challenge with their arches falling at some point. This can be slightly painful when it happens, but will ultimately make the feet flat and longer.

Finding the proper shoes begins with understanding the importance of fitting shoes before you buy them. Many who are much more interested in fashion may not always find the connection between a good shoe and good health. As many long-time pain sufferers can attest, however, a shoe is a vital health investment. A shoe that promotes good health trumps a shoe that promotes good fashion every time.
