Toenail fungus is a problem that has plagued society since its very inception. And, although we have certainly come a long way with understanding its causes and developing remedies, it is a problem that continues to resurface.
Over the years a plethora of homemade remedies for toenail fungus have been shared, some having a greater effect than others. The recent development of laser treatment therapy is the newest in the vast catalog of solutions, but one that has certainly proven itself to be the most effective to date.
Let’s take a look at some alternative household toenail fungus remedies (though it should be noted that these remedies are highly experimental and that the only sure solution is consult a specialist).
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a topical antiseptic and oxidizing agent that has been reported to work in the killing of toenail fungus. By soaking one’s toes in a hydrogen peroxide based solution for no more than 5 minutes a day, it has been said that the growth of a healthier nail is then made possible. The key to this form of treatment is to allow the nail to soak long enough to penetrate the nail bed, only then will the hydrogen peroxide get to the actual fungus.
Cornmeal Mixture
It is a little known fact that Cornmeal has natural anti-fungal properties that can prove to be effective when combating toenail fungus. It is recommended that you mix one part cornmeal to two parts warm water. Let the mix stand for thirty minutes and then add a bit more warm water (just enough to have a paste-like consistency). Soak the toes in the mixture between thirty to sixty minutes. This is to be repeated every three to four days in order to effectively defuse the fungal issue.
Garlic Extract
Garlic Extract is a great and highly documented anti-fungal agent. It is recommended for one to take 6 teaspoonfuls each day to reverse the damage cause by a fungal infection. Further measures can also be taken by blending raw garlic into a paste and applying it directly to the affected area. One can also dust their feet and shoes with garlic powder on a daily basis.
But Will They Cure Toenail Fungus?
Although these remedies have been known to work on some, it is certainly no guarantee for those with more advanced stages of the infection. Therefore, it is always recommended to consult with an expert to see if a more aggressive treatment may better serve your particular needs. In particular, home remedies typically only help to treat the symptoms temporarily, rather than remove the issue entirely.
