If you’re dealing with black toenail fungus, there’s no need to panic. You’re not alone! Thousands of people are treating, or receiving treatment for, the same condition.
When it comes to nail fungus, toes are typically affected more than fingers. This is because fungi thrives in dark, moist, places. And toes typically have less circulation than fingers. Less circulation means that it’s harder for your body to detect a problem.
One of the keys to getting rid of a fungal nail infection, is starting treatment as soon as you notice the first symptoms. Toenail fungus never goes away by itself. The longer you have it, the worse it gets.
The following tips will help you eradicate black toenail fungus. It’s extremely important to remember that this won’t happen overnight. Once the fungi is dead, it generally takes 3 to 6 months for your nail to fully re-grow into a healthy, clear one.

Soak Your Feet
Add 2 cups of vinegar, either apple cider or white, to a large container of warm water. Soak your feet for at least 20 minutes, re-warming the water as necessary. As an alternative, you can use medicated mouthwash, such as Listerine. Dry your feet completely.
If you don’t have time to soak your feet, soak a cotton ball in vinegar or mouthwash and apply it to the affected area. Hold it there for 1 to 2 minutes. Repeat three times a day, if possible.
Some individuals report that using Vicks VapoRub, is helpful in treating a fungal nail infection. Rub a small amount on the affected nails and put on a pair of white cotton socks. Sleeping in the socks, allows the rub to stay in place for several hours, which is even more beneficial.
People have seen mixed results from this method.
Trim Nails Frequently
Keep your nails trimmed short and always cut them straight across. Avoid cutting the cuticles, as that may cause further infection. Remember, don’t share nail clippers or scissors with family members. Black toenail fungus is contagious.
Wear Proper Shoes
The best shoes to wear are styles that are made from a material, which allows ventilation. ‘Breathable’ materials include mesh and leather. Avoid footwear that has pointed or narrow toes. Square toe-beds provide the most room, so there’s a lesser chance for your feet to sweat.
Never wear shoes without socks, unless you’re wearing flip-flops at the pool or spa. Choose cotton socks, as opposed to nylon or other synthetic materials.
