Many women use artificial nails for aesthetic purposes. These nails are mainly available in two forms namely: acrylic and gel overlay. Linen or silk are usually used to make fake nails stronger and then tips added to make them longer. The bed of the nail has to be prepared in such a way as to facilitate the addition of the device on a semi-permanent basis.
The Consequences of Artificial Nails
As beautiful as fake nails can be, they are not completely safe. The following are some of the potential risks and dangers.
- The tools used to get the job done might not be very hygienic.
- Some of the substances used during the process might cause allergic reactions in some people.
- If the original nail bed is damaged it could leave the skin exposed consequently making it vulnerable to infection-causing microorganisms.
To remove the nails once they have served their purpose, various chemicals are used. The consequence of this is weakening of the defense system in the targeted area further increasing the risk of infection. If moisture finds its way between the natural and the artificial nail, infection could occur. Inhaling or absorbing some of the toxins used in the process can be harmful to expectant mothers.
Common Nail Infections
When the artificial nail is put in place, it should cover the natural one completely. If even the tiniest space is left anywhere, moisture will enter and this will create the perfect environment for the growth of fungus.
Fungus that affects the nails is known as onychomycosis pseudomonas and it can cause great damage to the same. The moist environment may also lead to the growth of mold-like bacteria. This may in turn cause displacement of the artificial nail. If left untreated pus may form.
Treating the Infection
Both natural and pharmaceutical treatment options are available for nail infections. The natural ones include tea tree oil and vinegar. On the pharmaceutical side, anti-fungal medication is the most common form of treatment. The reality, however, is that all these options can take quite a while to yield results if at all. A more effective option is laser treatment as it kills all the organisms right on the spot.
Prevention Tips
- All the tools used should be properly sterilized
- Before adding the artificial nail you should ensure that the natural one is totally clean and dry.
- Wash your hands often
- Existing infections should not be covered using fake nails; this will only serve to worsen the condition. Only healthy nails should be worked on
- If the fake nail moves out of place, clean the area with an alcohol solution before putting it back
- Those with a habit of putting their fingers in the mouth should not wear artificial nails.
