The most common type of toenail fungus in North America areĀ dermatophytes. Dermatophytes are a type of fungi that cause skin infections. The most common species of this fungus is called “Trichophyton rubrum”.
The Many Sides of Trichophyton Rubrum
Trichophyton rubrum is a surprisingly common fungus, and can be found in more places on the body than just the toes. It comes in many colours from red to brown to yellow, and is waxy and smooth.
Some of the infections that the fungus can cause include:
- Ringworm (actually called dermatophytosis, and not caused by worms at all)
- Athlete’s foot
- Jock itch
- Fungal folliculitis of the scalp
- Fungal folliculitis of the beard
- Fungal folliculitis of the legs — often occurs in females who shave their legs.
- Onychomycosis (nail infection)
Why Me?
Nail fungus can be an uncomfortable affliction, so a lot of sufferers wonder why they got it in the first place. Up to 10% of Americans have nail fungus, and this number is even higher in Europe. You may be more prone to toenail fungus if you have diabetes or psoriasis.
If your toenail is invaded by foot fungus, it can grow under and around the nail bed and under the nail plate. This fungus can not be easily accessed for washing, but it can be treated with specialized laser treatment.
